To help ensure the success of the day, we have put together some guidance notes which we hope are useful to you in participating during the event.
Before the day itself
If you are not familiar with the area of the Coastal Path you will be standing at, we encourage you to visit the area beforehand. This visit may be useful for you to understand your travel plans and how long you need to set off on the day, and also so you are familiar with local car parks
Please dress for the weather! Along the Coastal Path the winds can be particularly strong so please ensure you wear appropriate clothing, that includes footwear (high heels isn’t best!) and a coat
Depending on the Prayer Point you have selected, it may be necessary to familiarise yourself with tide times. For more information about this please click here
Along the path there are not necessarily shops or eateries nearby, therefore please ensure that you bring along with you sufficient drinks and food to participant in the event
Please obey any local signage on or near the Coast Path advising of conduct or behaviour for any path users
All participants are responsible for their own health and safety on the day (for more info - click here). Therefore, please carry out your own risk assessment as part of the event and if, for example, where you have selected to stand is too dangerous for whatever reason, please move to somewhere differently. Although, we have invited participants to stand 1 mile apart from each other, this is only guidance and please adjust your position on the Coastal Path accordingly
Please be honouring of God’s creation, therefore please pick up all litter and place this in bins or take this home with you
During the course of the 30 min event
Take photos and photos of your participation during the event - we’d love to see them! Tag us @southwestawake or email us with them
Safety on the South West Coast path
The following largely applies to Prayer Points that are located along the cliffs and remote beaches, but provide useful points to be studied before selecting or walking on the coast path.
Protect your self from the sun, sea breezes can hide the strength of the sun
Informal paths leading to beaches can be dangerous and should be avoided
If you intend to cross a beach sure, be sure to check the local tide times to ensure you are not cut off by an incoming tide
Keep back from the cliff edges, a slip or fall especially during wet or windy conditions could be fatal
Due to erosion, some cliffs or overhangs are unstable
Take special care of children and dogs who may not see the dangers of cliff edges or other unsafe locations such as blow holes
Do not disturb animals or wildlife (the path often crosses farming areas), stay well clear and walk around them
Dress appropriately, wear suitable footwear for the terrain and the weather, and check the forecast before you leave
Coastal areas are susceptible to mist, fog and high winds, if these conditions are forecast for your location on the day of South West Awake, it is suggested to review your proposed exact location to ensure you/your groups safety. Be especially aware if mist or fog is forecast
If planning on one of the more remote Prayer Points at least two walkers should go together. Do not rely on mobile phone coverage as some areas of the route do not have signal coverage for one or more mobile network providers
The coastal path passes through town and villages, seafront, harbours, esplanades etc many of which are in close proximity to car parking and on solid footpaths. Away from the above locations the coastal path is likely to be more natural with uneven paths, and in some locations steep valleys to traverse
